Im new and have a prob with my 86 560sel
Hi, I'm new to this site, I have a few cars a 89 Jaguar XJ6 and a 86 Mercedes 560SEL and I'm having a problem with my Benz. I had bought the car a while back, I have not done much to it, but this the problems I'm haveing and hope to find answers to lead me to a less troublesome drive.
Problem #1:
When I bought the vehicle, I got it at a great deal, very low priced, never owned one b4. Well, the guy said, after he installed a new water pump, the tranny has not shifted up right ever since it was done. I was told, that there is a vacum part that causes this. When you drive it will go, no bad sounds, but gets to high rpms, then it will shift hard, or if i just let off gas a bit, it will then shift up. I have to do this every gear. Now it seems to down shift just fine. What is the culprate, and how can I test down to the prob, i cannot find work manuals for this car. Hope there is a solution to this, verses going to a mech shop. I have worked on plenty of cars, just not any like this.
Problem #2:
This next problem has just recently been a nussaince, I live in Minnesota, its pretty cold now, but I decided to use my benz and keep it washed. Well I have been driving the car, and it seems to not accelrate like it used to, like, tranny does seem to be the same, as described in #1, but like in a vehicle with 4 barrels, when all 4 barrels are open, you fly, well this car did fly when it was pushed down. now it seems to move, but not as it did, can this be because of the cold air? or is there a different problem here, the motor seems to run and it does idle just like it should. One day it was running higher idle, but it stopped after the day was over. After that day, it still moved just as fast, but now maybe cause its soo cold it wont move like that or there is a way to narrow this down as well. Hope I can find answers, anyone that can help, that would be great.
Thanks, this is all I need for now, hope to find help!

Hello, The situation inyour Problem #1 sounds familiar to my 380 SEC. When changing the water pump it was necessary to pull the distributor, and perhaps the timing is now a little off. Or the tranny linkage became misaligned. Another culptit could be the Throttle control valve, which may be dirty. I hope this leads you the right direction. Good luck!
To problem number two: There is ways to narrow this thing down too. My uncle had the same problem and it was basically his fuel pump going out but that usually have nothing to do with the cold. Then another source could be that that throttle control valve which may be just sticking because of dirt and cold. Sometimes that makes parts of a car stick or freeze when they shouldn't. It should be a simple fix though.
Well Problem #2 is Solved!!! I got into it, lubed up rods and linkages, that fixed it for the acceleration problem, I gave it new tune up, oil, filter, air filter, now engine is top notch. But tranny still has a hard time up shifting. Thanks for help.
