Default 2000 S320 Fault code

hi,
Just had my S320 in the garage for a performance related issue, Main problem was on kick down, engine would 'loose' a cylinder ( possibly 2) and run like a bag of poo untill i turned off and restared it. Garage came back and told me that ecu was giving error codes of: P0170, P0173 and 163. First two are 'trim bank 1' & 'trim bank 2' respectivly, third has description of 'auto box can bus malfunction/ecu'. Can any 1 help with these/explain what is wrong, my technical knowledge extends as far as hit with a hammer till it works, if it dont its broken!. Garage said possibly reloading ecu software will solve this problem but they cant do it, has to be a main merceds dealer (mega bucks) so any help will be greatfully recieved.

Many thanks

Stuart

Classic symptoms.
Naz is correct. Not sure I would go 101% but MAF is definitely the likely cause.
You can try cleaning the MAF before changing (see previous posts on the subject). A new MAF will set you back a few hundred dollars!.
Use only a genuine Mercedes/Bosch unit.

Other makes MAY work OK but give code problems.

firstly, i just want to thank both or you for your responses, it is greatly appriciated. i will check out the locating/cleanliness of the MAF sensor, but......could 1 of you give me a quick idea of where to locate the sensor itself, and roughly what it looks like as i might aswell be looking at the space shuttle under the bonnet pretty much, a general idea will be fine, im sure i can find and check it before i go to mercedes and spend my entire life savings on a repair[sm=hiya.gif]!

Many thanks again

ok, just been to merc's, they have run a full diagnostic test (which they didnt charge me for, nice people!), and they have confirmed that the MAF unit is at fault. Thank you all very much for your help on this matter, saved a lot of time and money. The new unit is going to be 285 pounds, and fitting will be about 50 pounds, so not as bad as i was expecting.

Hi,

Wish my dealer would do a free diagnostic quick check. They usually charge at least £25.

My latest scam is to get the car scanned for Body electrival SRS electrical etc codes every time I take it for a MOT. Condition of getting them to do the MOT (at standard price of course) is a "free" quick diagnosticscheck.

yeah i was very impressed, just for any 1 wanting future referance with the diagnostics, the specified values for the HFM-SFI voltage is 0.990 > 1.040 v, mine was at 1.133v, quoting the tech who did the test for me: 'thats propper f**ked mate' lol. he also said that even if the volatge was in the upper end of the specified value, it would still be the culprit of my problems, very intollerant sensor were his words.
