w123 **FREE** to a good home
It's a real pity.
I'm offering my 1982 230e petrol auto for free to anyone who wants to have it, use it and enjoy it.
I'm gutted!
I've had the car since 2000 and it has been my rock, seen me through the best and the worst of times.
I'm now studying for a PhD in Birmingham and I can't afford to keep the car on the road, so I am offering it to someone who will.
The car is in overall very good condition. Bad points first though:
- water ingress from somewhere, collecting in the passenger foot wells
- some under-paint rusting on nearside passenger windscreen pillar, passenger front wheel arch and windscreen corner
- usual scuffing on driver backrest
- stereo not working, but has 4 new speakers
- been stood since insurance ran out (Aug '05)
- small vac leak - central locking but not unlocking!
- sunroof needs re-greasing
- no tax of MoT
- small dent in front wing, passenger side
Good points:
- white walls, 5 factory alloys, merc logo mudflaps, driver armrest, chrome arches
- 160,000 miles
- blue with blue cloth interior
- uber reliable
IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ:
I would MoT it and put it on e-bay; I'd get good money for it. But as I am sure you can all understand, I am really attached to the car. I want someone to use it, and when it is surplas to requirements (be that a year or more from now) I will take the car back. Hopefully by then I will have finished the PhD and be able to lavish the care and attention it deserves.
Whoever takes the car will not be permitted to sell it on.
If anyone wants to take this car, use it, love it and enjoy it, it's yours. Just make sure I get her back one day.
Thanks for reading folks.
Daniel

...is that a reference to the handbrake lever?
Everyone finds that a bit quirky...it gets really embarressing when you drive a 'normal' car and start flapping around by the window trying to find the handbrake!

You would let a total stranger use your car for a number of years then just give it back to you? What's the catch?
Who will be the legal owner of the car?
Are you trying to find someone to restore and repair your car so you can take it back?
Will you buy it back or do you expect to get it for free after someone puts money into it?
What does MoT mean?

Come on now...
Surely you can understand having a strong attachment to a car, especially one as special as a classic benz?!
An MoT is an annual road worthiness test required by UK law to run a vehicle. It comprises a number of checks that must all be passed before a vehicle is allowed on the road (although vehicles are exempt up until they are 3 years old.) To sell a car without an MoT is very difficult, as the new owner has no idea how much work may be required to make the car road legal.
I'm unfortunately not in a position to put the car in for the test, even though I know that there is very little work to be done.
I would rather an enthusiast has ownership of the car and enjoys it for as long as they want, rather than it rot away on the drive. Inactivity is a killer for any old car. The degree to which the new owner wants to 'fix up' the car is at their discretion...it's in good condition, solid and reliable.
At the end of the day, I am trying to make the offer as attractive as possible and only advertising on MB forums as I don't want any old happy-go-lucky bargain hunter to take me for a mug.
Take it easy,
Daniel
