Want to buy '72 220 (gas) --- What to look for?
I'm relatively new to the whole MB family. My brother has an '85 300dt, which he now has for sale after finding out the engine is on its last leg. He just picked it up this past February so was pretty distraught to find it was in such bad mechanical shape. He wants to fix it but is leaving for the Navy in July and doesn't want it to just sit around. I've driven it several and have fallen in love with all w123 and older MB's.
I want my next car to be a Benz. I found a '72 220 (gas) for $1000/obo. It needs brakes and exhaust to pass inspection. I plan to go take a look at it but I'm not sure what things I should be watching out for other than a few things I've read on forums and such. It's an auto trans and single carb, 4-cylinder petrol engine. He was in the process of semi-restoring it (it's not perfect) but doesn't have much time to finish it anymore and doesn't want it to go to waste.
I'm thinking of offering $800. I still have to get it brakes, exhaust, then inspected and hope that's all it needs. I won't know much on the car until I meet the guy in person. Any suggestions?
