Just recently, I got an 86 420 SEL. It's a 4 door, 4.2L V8 and I don't know how the controls function. I see these buttons in a row, one looks like defrost windshield. The others have arrows pointed up and down, some filled in, one with EC in the middle of the arrow on one button. Then there are three buttons to the right of the buttons in a row, on has a filled in fan image, another has AUTO one it, the last one has a blank fan image on it. Then of course there is the rotary **** with numbers ranging from what I think is degrees in Celcius. and the **** has a blue image to a red image on it. When I press the Defrost looking button the fan blows full force without me being able to control this, I don't know if this is normal. I'm new to Mercedes and have always dreamed of having one, but I don't know how to operate it.[8D] Help please.

 

yes it is normal.

i assume it got no owner's manual no more.

fan high speed
fan low speed
according to your settings with that rolling **** with blue, white and red color. the inside temperature sensor takes care of it.
EC is for economy. it is a compressor switch.

those up and down arrows could be the air vent such as center, footwell, etc.
