engine for 190e

hay everybody,
im looking at getting an old `86 190e, its an amazing machine, all the electronics work, little rust, no leaks... but after running it past my local merc dealer they informed me that the engine was almost dead (someone enjoyed this car a little too much!). just wondering if anyone knows the approximate cost of a engine swap (either another 190 engine, or if you know of any other engines that fit, that would also be helpful)

(if possible please quote in aussie dollers or indicate what currency you are using)

thanks, David

changing with another engine type with only little difference is not advisable. too any things to do and parts involved.

just rebuild the engine. increase the pistons from standard to maximum oversized of 0.75.

It would probably be easier/cheaper to rebuild your engine. Many options on engine swaps tho. You can fit alot of MB engines in there. Theres been Chevy, Ford, and Nissan engines swapped into the W201 190. In the U.S. its pretty cheap for domestic engines, but requires alot of work.

Well if you really want a new engine, the easiest upgrade I heard is if you have a 2.3 and going to a 2.6 or 3.0. Then there are more upgrades that might take a little work.

A 2.3 engine may run you around $3,000. 3,953.16 AUD
A 2.6 will run you around $3,500 and up usually. 4,612.03 AUD

A 3.0 will run you around $3,500 and up also. 4,612.03 AUD
This is just for the engines alone.

It will be a bit cheaper to just rebuild. But do what you feel is best.

hay, found my old post!
i realised that an engine swap/rebuild would be a bit too difficult and time consuming at the moment, so i let that car pass..
instead i got myself a 1984 190e in a green/gold colour, it looks like it just rolled of the truck! origanal mags, paint, first aid kit, sheepskins, even the tools to change the tyre are the original merc stamped items. the glove box is full of receipts and history... perfect!
-not too bad for a first car-
now all i need to do is find a cosworth kit and some good looking mags.

Its actually the W201 190 16v body kit. Cosworth is just another company within itself. Ever heard of a Ford Cosworth motor?
