240D wont start,PLEASE HELP

I own a 1983 240D. When you put the key in the ignition and turn it to the second position the glow plug relay box makes a loud vibrating noise. I replaced the relay box but the ame thing happens with the new part. The car wont start. The starter doenst even budge. The lights in the dash for the brake and glow plug and battery that normally turn on,dont. I think there is an electrical short but Im not really sure. Please Help

240DOwner,</P>

Sounds like a low voltage problem. Are you SURE that the battery is OK? Low voltage will cause relays to buzz. They are trying to close, but the voltage is not high enoughto produce a strong magnetic field.</P>

Good Luck,</P>

How old are the glowplugs? I've owned 2 different 240Ds, and when I replaced the glow control I also replaced the four glowplugs -- in fact, they came together as a kit from Bosch.</P>

I'm fairly sure the glow control will not work properly unless it senses the appropriate resistance from the four glowplugs. Also check the routing of the glowplug cabling to ensure it is not shorting against a metal surface along the engine. That could certainly make the relay "buzz."</P>

Good luck.</P>
