It is illegal for anyone to build, offer or sell replicas of the 300 SL, even if the Mercedes-Benz logo isn't used on the model.

Mercedes-Benz has destroyed a replica of the 300 SL, further enforcing copyright protection the German automaker has put on the iconic vehicle design that was first introduced in 1954.
The body shape of the 300 SL, with its unmistakable gullwing doors, has been trademarked by Daimler AG for several decades. Employees who originally designed the model also gave Daimler AG exploitation rights. As such, it is illegal for anyone to build, offer or sell replicas of the 300 SL, even if the Mercedes-Benz logo isn’t used on the model.
German custom officials seized the replica from a company based in Germany. The vehicle was taken to the Mercedes-Benz used-parts centre, which is responsible for scrapping prototypes and development units.
After separating the chassis from the body, the carbon fibre body was placed in a press and crushed into, as Mercedes-Benz describes it, “small pieces.” The destroyed vehicle was then stamped with a “confirmation of scrappage” sign.
Mercedes-Benz calls the 300 SL “one of the best known cars in the world,” and calls the original coupe and the roadster released in 1957 as two of the most coveted classic cars ever.
The SLS-AMG coupe and roadster that were released in 2010 and 2011, respectively, pay homage to the SL’s classic design.
