Default New Member w/ C280 Question

I have found this forum to be very helpful. I just bought my second C class (1999 C280). I previously owned a 1997 C230 which was totaled by a guy who ran a red light and T-boned me (very glad I was in a Mercedes though!). I posted a question in the C class forum, but I thought I would post it here too to maximize responses. I have an annoying rattle in the rear view mirror, and it is driving me crazy!! Besides the rattle, the car is perfect! Does anyone know how to disassemble the rear view mirror so that I can get behind the mirror and see what is causing the rattle? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Are you serious? What do you mean by "pry it off the bracket first"? Pry what off what bracket? I really do not want to break anything in the process!

Sleepwalker-
Do you mean the black trim piece around the front side of the rear view mirror? Does that part come off by prying it off? By the way, I can't believe how much you know about these cars! It is amazing!

The auto body restoration shop I used had a S Class with a rattling inside rear view mirror. Long story short, one of the shop tech's took it apart, but it wouldn't go back together again. Don't know if the tech screwed up or the these mirrors are a DIY type piece. The replacement cost as I remember was over $1K. Or you could ride around with the radion blasting. I took my sons Acura out on an errand last week, and he blast the radio 24/7? I turned if off and found out why, the interior is a rattle trap.

I WILL HAVE SOME PICS POSTED OF MY HIGH FLOW INTAKE ON MY 99 C280 POSTED TOMORROW!!!!

for the benifet of the doubt that you might have a different type mirror installed, can you please show us the photo of the base without the cover?

Allan was right, putting this back together is a tricky thing because that loose strip metal clip is the one that holds the thing together too. if the mounting of the clip is chipped out, you need to fabricate it to hold back again.

Thanks Sleepwalker and C280 Wizard for offering suggestions. Since I know this is keeping you all up at night (just kidding), I'll let you know how I fixed it. Also, from searching this website, I know that in the past other MB owners have had this problem. I figured out that the rattling noise was coming from the electromagnetic sensor on the right side of the mirror. Probably a loose part, spring, I'm not really sure. My husband tried to pry the front piece off (the black plastic surrounding the front of the rear view mirror). We could tell that this was probably going to end in disaster, so we decided to stop. But, being the perfectionist that I am, the noise was driving me insane. So, I took a long screw driver and wrapped a cotton ball around the end and stuck it in the inside of the rear view mirror from the opening at the top. And, it worked! Buzzing noise gone! It sounds really ridiculous, but it worked so I don't really care that I have a cotton ball stuck in my mirror. No one will ever see it, and the electromagnetic sensor still works. I hope this helps anyone else with this problem. You probably do not want to mess with opening up the rear view mirror. As C280 Wizard said, the replacement cost is probably over $1 K.
