I am new here from Norfolk VA. I am considering buying this and need some recomendations.

Must Sell. Make me a reasonable offer on this 1973 Mercedes Benz. I am relocating and cannot take it with me. 130k mi. Car is in decent shape given it is 36 years old. Runs great drive away today.
The guy was asking 5K for it last month I offered a grand for ****s and giggles and he said 1200. I might just jump on it.

Should i try haggling more or should I stop looking a gift horst in the mouth?

Also how can I tell if this is gas or deisel? Did they make both for that year?

If its as good as it looks buy it!!! Espcially if its a diesel cause if u dont ill drive down to Norfolk and get it. I should say on the inside of the fuel door if its a diesel not to mention u didnt give the model number so i cant tell u either way.

Model is

1973 Mercedes Benz 220
Is that deisel? I have heard that if it's deisel then 130k miles is just breaking it in and it will last forever!

Well its not a diesel but that is still low miles and i would still like to have it but i cant justify it to myself as much if it aint one. Try 1100 and go ahead and pay 1200 if he wont take 1100. They made the 220 from 1968 to 1973. auto or manual? Also the car is 34 years old not 36. and no rust right???

I am going to try to go 1000 but my problem is I don't have all the money now. I am hoping if I want it that I can give him 800 and the rest on payday. Not sure about rust but I think it would have been mentioned in the add if it did. I will look for it. I am meeting him around noon today.
Anything specific I should look for or ask him about? I am also test driving it. What should I look for during a drive? Is this stick or auto trans? I am not sure.
Here's more pics though

I am not too familiar with pre-1980s mercedes but i assume that they were made with the same quality workmanship as VW beetles hopefully better cause of the price difference but there arent many electrical germilns to worry about so i cant say.

Ok I just came from checking it out. Like an idiot I test drove it but didn't turn anything on like the heat or ac or anything like that. I guess I should have.

Behind the back left tire is some rust that is deeper than surface. On the hood is some rust that is just surface rust. The tags are dead and will need inspected. Under the hood at the top of the engine is a dry rotted hose. He says it's a fuel hose. The left tail light is out and he says he has a bulb for it though.

Oh and a big thing was he said he would take 1000 for it and was ok with taking 800 now and the other 200 on payday then about half hour later he called me and said he would take 800 for it and use the other 200 to fix the hose.
Will 200 fix that hose?

RE: New here

I talked to my uncle about this car. He's been a mechanic since I met him. (Easily 25 years or longer) and says that since the one hose was dry rotted what would the other hoses be like. He worked on a mercedes a while back and had to replace all the hoses in the engine area and that cost his customer 1700 just to get the hoses. Thats not counting labor. He is against the idea of me getting it.

Any other recommendations. It is 800 bucks.

Hoses $1700???? I dont think so i am not calling ur uncle a liar but unless it cost 1200 in labor then maybe. I'd get the car cause it will run forever so ur call but then again it isnt a diesel so its nothing too special. I have seen people ask alot more for a worse off car. Goodluck with ur choice.
