I just purchased my first diesel - 81 300CD
First viewed 300 miles away from my from door step this past Sunday... So excited! I haven't sleep much since. During the decision/evaluation process... I noticed the following... Body starting to rust out... Engine has lots oil on just about everything in the lower portion of the compartment.
Dip stick displayed oil well below the lower notch.... 2 1/2 qts low. Tranny fluid appeared ok... coolant full... after idling for 20 min I noticed a small leak at firewall heater inlet hose. Windows move extremely slow to not at all. driver side headlamp has high beam only??? Instrument cluster has no lights for gauges. Lots - too much sway at high speed... suspension and steering apparently worn... Battery will not hold charge, something pulling battery down??? Horn has been bypassed with button under dash??? There appears to be a wire running directly from horn to + battery post??? Tranny shifted smoothly... Out of all test drives this one is best yet by far. Engine idled great and ran great... ok pick-up and go... Prime canidate for diesel purge and valve adjustment - right????
Glow plugs and ejectors, oil/cam gaskets, hoses, belts... What else?
Went back last night knowing all of the about paid for car, topped off the oil, set the headlights to high beam and drove it 300 miles to my front door, daughter leading all the way back. Turned car off for the first time and attempted to restart - no luck! Oh! Temp gauge never moved although I did have heat blowing strongly all the way, but never was as warm as I would have expected with thermostat maxed out?? And I never knew how fast I was going - no lights for gauges. Stressful!!! Brakes where great although they squeeked loudly on occasion.
Well, as you can see I'm going to need help and I appreciate any/all advice.
I need to stop battery power drain and get all lights working properly first up... Agree? Looking forward to it.... Until next time... Thanks. Seadog Out!
