Default ASR / 500sel

Greetings.
I purchased a 500sel in mavelous condition. With the exception of a few small idiosyncrasies I feel its a great car. Currently, the ASR light comes on a cold start. Are there any thoughts as to the problem.

Does the light go out when you begin to accelerate?

If so, it may be that the voltage supplied the the unit is too low at idle when cold.

Have you checked the condition of your battery lately? Have this checked as well as your charging system and idle speed.

Or give us some more info and we'll go from there.

Hope this helps

Is it right to assume that your car is about a 1994 model w140?

The 500 is a 1992 / 140 series.

The ASR does not go out when i accelerate. The battery check is a good suggestion.

As of yesterday I decided to have diagnostics run on it just to see, if I need to mortgage the house or just roll over.

I appreciate the help.

Additional info: occassionally when i'm driving the ASR will come on and the car looses power // it feels like fuel is being shut down as a saftey feature. I pull over, shut the car down and restart and it's fine.

I wonder if this is a result of the SAM chip going bad.

Your car is going into "limp mode."

If your model has a manual switch for the ASR, turn it off. That should keep it from going into limp mode while you try to figure out what's wrong. It's possible it will just correct itself after a few cold starts and a few miles.

Have you recently had the wheels removed for any reason?

Are the front and rear tires the same size (height)?

Is the tire air pressure correct?

What you are describing sounds like a faulty electronic accelerator actuator. It will bring on the ASR light, and go to emergency mode, giving you a max of 1500RPM. It may also bring on the fuel saftey shutoff. It is probably a worn potentiometer within the actuator.

A fault code readout would confirm this.

Get ready to mortgage the house. I once had someone try to repair one of these for me, but it was not possible.

You might still be lucky and find a loose or broken wire to the actuator, or a fault code might point to something else.

Good Luck
