Unhappy 1996 SL500 Running Rough

I recently had an issue with engine stalling. With some advice from fellow MB owners, I changed the MAF and that seemed to resolve the problem. I decided to detail the motor (Gunk), rinsed, dried and ran it til completely dry. It ran well. A couple of weeks later I started it and it was running ok. Then it began running rough. I know I probably have to bring it in for diagnosis but wondered if anyone can offer an opinion. BTW, the MAF sensor was after market (Duralast from AutoZone).

Hello and welcome to the forum! As you mentioned, the best course of action would be to have the codes pulled. This should give you a definitive answer as to where the issue is. I'm also attaching a link to our site's DIY tech articles on the R129 platform.

Thank you. I will check out those links. My problem is resolved. I had the local Firestone dealer do the diagnostic and they found it was number 8 cyl firing intermittently. Wound up needing a new plug and coil pack. Seems that when detailing the engine some water got in where it shouldn't have. Anyone looking to clean your engine compartment, be sure to dry it out well. I used a leaf blower and thought I got all the water out. I should have removed the air filter cover and blown out any water below (coil packs). Just be sure not to get water in to the MAF (cover it with a baggie). Great forum!

Excellent! Glad that it wasn't too serious of an issue and that you got it resolved. Please let us know if there's anything else that we can help you with!
