won't go in gear

i'm going to show my ignorance here...this is probably an easy one for you all...but my 2001 slk won't go out of park. it starts just fine, but i can't get the gear shift to move into gear.(it is an automatic)

Press brake pedal?

If yours is tiptronic press hidden button at rear end of shifter gate.

Very common issue IF AUTOMATIC.

I'm with Bazzle but I add that the cause is usually down to a faulty brake light switch, if indeed you are pressing the pedal whilst trying to move the shifter.

Its an electronic safety device to prevent you putting the car into gear without the brakes on. To many of you guys have ended up thru the end of the garage!!
