Timing Belt vs. Timing Chain
 

Just changed the timing belt on my 1998 Lexus with 120,000 miles. (was quite pricey), Someone told me that Mercedes do not have Timing Belts, but have timing chains, similiar to the chain on a bicycle. I was also told that these chains do not ever need to be replaced and usually last the life of car. Was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this. Also, this is my first Mercedes, All the cars I have had in the past (with the exception of the Lex) has needed a Head Gasket withing the first 150,000 miles. Anyone has any experience with this?...and also how does one extend the life of the head gasket?...letting the car warm up in cold weather?

Timing chain. All that wears normally is the slides. Chain will stretch in the process of time but generally very reliable.

Dont leave idling for too long. Just start, put on seat belt, adj mirrors, check behind for kids and traffic and drive off sensible until temp comes up to op temp before hitting the gas hard.
