Steering Noice
 

Hi there! I'm new to this site and I've tried to search and find some answers to my question but I havn't found any pleasing answer. Perhaps it's my bad knowledge of mechanic language, or simply my english. Don't know =P

Well, of to the question now - I've got a MB SLK 200 1997. I bought it from a dealer (used cars) one week ago fromtoday, actually. Everythingseems finewith it and I totally love the car! Happy to join your club =)

It has done 120.000 km (75.000 miles more or less) and all services.

The problem is, when I turn left or right at afairly low speed (2nd gear around 2000 rpm (when parking etc.)) I hear a noice from the steering servo, and if i turn a little bit more the noice increases. I've read that all servo steering cars sound a little bit, but it doesn't seem right when it makes too much noice. It's hard to explain since I'm not a professor in english =P

If anybody has ever had the same problem and got a solution for it, I would really apreciate an answer!

Hi,
Get it on a car lift and determine where the noise is coming from. Pump, Steering Rack, Pulleys etc.

Is the car still fitted with the original size wheels and tyres? Could the noise be the tyres rubbing the body work?

Ok, thanks, I'll try do it that as soon as possible!

Yes, the car is still fitted with the original 16" MB tyres. Is sounds like it's coming more from the center of the engine (while I'm listening in the car.

I assume you have checked the PAS fluid level.

PAS fluid, is that the steering fluid for the servo? I'm going out to the car to check that right away. I'll let you know in 5-10 minutes.

Hi again Stuart,

Well I was just looking around around the engine but I don't think I found the PAS (I'm not sure what to look after). At first I thought that the brake fluid container was for the steering but obviosly it wasn't. So, where do I find the PAS?

PAS Power assisted Steering resevoir is sited on front of engine. The pump has a pulley powered by the main serpentine belt on the front of the engine.

The pump resevoir cap is usually black and twists off. A small dipstick is attached to the inside of the cap.

Hi Stuart!

The PAS level is around "20 C Min". I have no idea though what "80 C" or "20 C" means? What kind of fluid should I refill it with?

Means min level at 20 deg centigrade or max level at 80 deg centigrade. basically it means min when engine cold or max when engine hot.

You use PAS oil.
