SLK Speakers
 

The speakers on my 1999 230 Kompressor are starting to sound terrible, but I believe replacement is not simple as they are a custom size available from main dealers. Any advice as to whether this job could be done in a more cost effective manner than through the main dealer and what parts would be appropriate?? Much appreciated!!!

If its the speakers thay can be swapped. Go to a radio shop and ask.

I have used their products before. They also help with installation.

I in very short time grew to HATE the stereo in my SLK. I replaced it with a Sony with a USB port for an IPod. I removed the entire sound system including the power amp that is well hidden under the foot panel on the passenger side. This I guess was a Mercedes secret! The original sound system uses 2 ohm speakers, for what reason is unknown to me. The stereo was very easy to install and the new speaker wires were a bit of a pain but not as bad as some I have done. The rear speakers are turned around backwards, something else I found odd. I installed Sony 6 1/2 inch 3 way speakers front and rear. The 6 1/2 inch speakers fit into the original spaeker brackets but you have to cut the grille on the bracket off but it is cover by the grill on the door panel anyways. The system blows the original away for sound! If you are going to replace the original speakers make sure they are 2 ohm and good luck finding them. If you enjoy quality music, with a little work you can have it and the IPod port makes needing a CD player a thing of the past. 2000 songs and no skips on the bad bumps! Any questions I will be glad to try and help....Music is my life!

I agree that the stereo is bad. My '07 SLK 350 is at the dealer now for it's first check and I have them looking into why I have no to minimum sound from the rear speakers. If your stero was not a Harmon Kardin, how many speakers were actualy installed in you car?

99 SLK Passenger Speaker Grill Cover thingie
 

I have a 99 slk and speaker grill or cover is cracked broken out, I was wondering where I could find a new speaker cover? It's cosmetic but drives me nuts. Thanks in advance for your help.

Rear speakers
 

Could you post your reply if you find out? I have almost no sound on my rear speakers either. I bought a new receiver, hoping that would fix the problem. Now I have great sound in the front, but still almost nothing from the rear speakers.

I think MBZ needs a recall if any other models have a mid-rear speaker cover like my '12 SLK does... I was backing into a parking space so when I turned around to look behind me and my elbow went behind me as my body shifted (completely normal/proper driving style/function/protocol for reversing) and my elbow smashed right through the speaker cover that is between the two seats. I wasn't punching it or aggressively turning my body somehow. I just bumped it with my elbow and went right through it... and cut the hell out of my elbow in the process. Why did this happen? Because this particular speaker grill (unlike the others in the car where feet might hit them) is made of a form of very low impact resistant polystyrene (I work in plastics) that is extremely brittle and shards upon impact...

ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO THEM? I know I'm not alone because my elderly father has the same car and did the same thing (I made fun of him at the time because he doesnt take the best care of his car and I just assumed he smashed it with a cane or something)...

ANYONE? MBZ is telling me its NOT under warranty as its NOT a manufacturers defect and that's just BS. They shouldn't make that vulnerable part out of shattering plastic!

you should save the amp if it will run at 2 ohms!! not many amps will unless you spend big $$ for them. I just got my 2000 slk230 and will use this amp for small subs only when time comes to revamp the sound systems. 2 ohms speakers are used mostly for sub systems and flipping the speaker around backwards show that's what the system was using them for.
I agree the factory system lacks sound in the mid range. plenty of bass and treble just no mids. with the speaker placement being limited I could see the need for some kind of BEE sound timing alignment.
