Default Remote/key dead

The remote on my 99 SLK 230 key went dead. Does anyone know if replacing the little battery is a diy or if I will have to schedule an appointment with the stealer and pay $268.95 for a special Mercedes battery straight from Germany?

Easy... takes two 2025 coin type batteries, best if you unfold the key first then pry the cover off that has the FCC id number stamped on it. Batteries go in with the + side facing you.

batteries can be bought at any general autoparts store. Very cheap too. My mechanic sayswhen you take out the batteries the new ones have to be put in with in a few minutes!!. best just to hand over your key to the store you get the batteries off..they will change it and test it for free

Update on the dead remote/key fob.... The batteries were easy enough to find (2 @ wal-mart for about $4 total !!!!), but fyi to anyone who has the problem, the remote on mine still would not work until I inserted the key into the igniotion and started the car. Apparently this reactivates something electronic in the unit that "turns off" when the batteries die. This might have happened(?) because I left the remote without batteries for days until I got around to buying new ones and installing them(???).
