Rattles in boot?

My 2001 320 is very quiet and smooth with the top down, however with the roof upthere are several rattles and "groans" eminating from the boot.I have wedged the load cover which was rattling about and smeared vaseline on some of the seals but the rattle is still there. I've checked everything obvious, spare wheel, tools etc.Any ideas?, it's driving me nuts! Thanks

RE: Rattles in boot?

vehicle jack contacting the boot floor is a common cause. Should be packed in polystyrene and even then handle can contact body.

That's a good recommendation. I have a 2006 slk with the same problem. The dealership has had the top off twice but it still rattles. It did get better after they worked on it last.

RE: Rattles in boot?

OK so you removed everything.... inc spare wheel?

So why do you think it is the roof?
The roof usually CREAKS ratherthan RATTLES.
However I'm not saying it isn't the roof, just eliminating other things first.
Adjusting the roof MAY lead to all sorts of problems if it is not done correctly and it is a complicated procedure.

How about the exhaust?
This can easily produce a rattle.
Get thecar on a lift and ensure that clearances around everything are OK and especially that the HEAT SHIELDS are tight and not contacting the floor.

RE: Rattles in boot?

i usually select one of the smallest mechanic and put him inside the trunk while i drive, in order to locate the noise.

noise may vary from every car.

it doesn't take much time to locate it. i just go to mcdonald, pick up my hamburger for lunch, open the trunk and ask the mechanic where the noise is.
