Hi All, looks like a fine forum. I just purchased a 1998 SLK 230 and I love it! It only has 37,000 miles on it... Just one small annoyance... There is an "SRS" light on the left side of the dash that stays on constantly. I can only assume airbag problems. The airbag has not been deployed unless I've been deceived. Any advice is appreciated. Could also use some direction with regard to maintainence as I got no manuals. If anyone can fill in the blanks, or point me in the right direction... Oil? Filters? Other fluids non-standard, i.e. brake, transmission? Suppliers for things like manuals? Things to watch out for? How's the winter performance (I'm in Wisconsin.)? I see premium is recommended... is that recommended by Exxon or MB, in other words, is lesser gas a big no-no? So many questions.... I'll try to get them answered by browsing and searching, but if any old hands here have too much time, feel free to enlighten me. Thanks!

SRS needs to be scanned by the MB dealer to determine code causing the problem. No other alternative.

Modern engines can run on most comnmercially available fuels however the lower the grade the less the performance due to the engine management system resetting ignition timing etc since it listens for any pinking (knock).
However since I know the regular fuel in the USA (I assume this is where you are living) is lower grade than that available say in the UK it would be wise to ensure that the manufacturer has not excluded such use.
I'm sure somebody with a similar car in your territory will look up the minimum fuel grade in their handbook for you or you can ask when you get the SRS checked.

Welcome to the forum steenstry!! Good looking SLK!

MB recommends Premium. If you love the car as much as you've stated, and want to treat it as such, don't feed it garbage...stick with premium fuel. I mean, it's only a $2 difference every fill-up. Look at it as an investment in the longivity of your SLK. ;)

I use plus 90-91 pump octane or premium as long as it is Shell or Chevron.

Check seat connector under passenger seat, senses person for airbag activation. Comes unplugged when a book etc is slid under seat.
