ignition key sticky on start

ignition key sticky on start
my 2002 SLK 320 key is very "sticky" when I try and start the car. It has been this way since new (2002) but of late it sometimes will not turn to start the car. I should have made an issue of it from the start but I thought it was the steering wheel lock. A new tumbler assembly was installed last week but it is the same. The dealer has ordered the steering wheel lock assembly now.
Are they guessing on the fix? Is a common problem with Mercedes?
Thanks
Sheldon
The unit was installed last week and it works better than when new. I should have tackled the problem 5 years ago.

that's the normal procedure to replace tumblers first then the steering lock. odds are that will fix the problem. keep your old tumbler just incase the new one fails down the road.
