I am considering the purchase of a 1999-2000 SLK230 with 60K-100K miles. Is there anything in particular, other than what I would look for in any used car, unique to this SLK vintage? Is there a common thread of problem/s?

My 1998 C230 runs strong and trouble-fee (knock on wood) with +140K miles, so I am hoping the SLK 230 has the same reliable engine. What about transmission problems? My TCM (transmission control module) went kaput but AAMCO misdiagnosed and expensively went through a process of elimination that eventually cost me $5300 for a simple $500 repair, but then I was stupid to take it to AAMCO in the first place. It was an EXPENSIVE lesson that involved ONE YEAR and four tows later before they figured the problem.

Your advice therefore is much appreciated before I buy a 1999/2000 SLK 230!!!

 

The engine is very reliable... Electronics (brake light switch, MAF, speed sensors, K40 module) and transmission (if not drained and the leaking plug) are the weak points... If not greased regularly the top also might cause problem... Check the engine mounts and the flex (donuts) of the shaft... Mine is a 1999 model and has almost 100.000 km on the counter... Regularly serviced by Mercedes... Altogether I paid +/- 1000,- euros in those 10 years in addition to the regular servicing... Which is not bad... Can recommend if the seller has the full service reports...

 

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I purchased a 2000 with 75,000 miles BELOW Blue Book value and from the ORIGINAL owner, who provided all service receipts since day one. I shall heed your advice on lubricating the mechanisms involved in the roof top movement, and I shall keep my fingers crossed for a lenghty enjoyment of a fine car.
