Fuel reading isn't accurate, tank sender replaced

My 2004 SLK Special Edition's fuel gauge won't go down to make the yellow warning light come on. The bottom of the needle's edge will go to the top of the little window that should be illuminated, and there it stays. When I replaced the sending unit in the tank I moved the float from one extreme to the other and the gauge followed right along plus the light went off and on. I had the identical problem I have now that's why I replaced the sender. It seemed OK for while but now it's back to doing what it did before. If you fill the tank the gauge shows full. With no power to the cluster the gauge falls down the lowest point it can go.

I have tried disconnecting the battery and grounding the positive lead with the ignition switch ''on" hopefully to bleed off any residual voltage in the cluster. Didn't seem to help, sad to say.

Some people constantly fill the tank when its reading 1/2, then the next time it's 1/2 they repeat the process. Somehow the system remembers where it was when filled and all of a sudden 1/2 is the new empty, and the gauge won't move below the 1/2 full mark. He suggested removing the fuse OR disconnecting the battery to make it lose the memory. I took the easy way and unhooked the battery lead.

I know the sending unit is fine, at least it was when it was installed, I have to think the problem is in the cluster or somewhere in between.

My wife drives the car and for her 'EMPTY' is right above the yellow fuel indicator that doesn't come on. I have told her just keep filling it when it gets down there, that way you won't run the pump dry and damage it. It would be nice to have resolution to the problem.

Ideas anyone?

Thank you all in advance.
