Hi - new to forum; My SLK230 died driving down the road the other day. As it turns out the timing chain broke and my mechanic said the engine is ruined. I was considering buying a second hand engine and replacing it myself. I have some experience with other cars but not Mercedes and am trying to figure out how hard a job this to replace the engine. Also, are all engines on the 1998 SLK 230 identical - i.e., do they all come with the supercharger or are there different variants. Any advice is welcome.

I agree. that is a very tough chain. It could stretch over time and maybe jump the gear teeth, but unlikely to break.
