Hi,
I have a 1999 SLK230 and the BAS/ASR warning light comes on every once in a while. I will be driving around and the warning light will come on, I do not notice anything wrong after it comes on. If I stop somewhere and turn the car off for a while the light resets itself and later it will randomly come on. Anyone now why this is happening.

BAS or ABS?
Suggest Brake light switch. 2 circuits. 1 operates the brake lights (Normally open), the other the ABS (Normally closed).
If the ABS is out it turns off the ASR.

 

ASR Traction control, wet road ??

Was it the ASR operation light (yellow triangle) which might be linked to a wet road or the ASR malfunction light that illuminated?
I assumed the ASR/ABS malfunction lights. Correct?

It is in the warning lights and shows up as BAS on top and ASR under it. They come on at the same time and while they are on I can not use the cruise control and the ASR switch does not work.

 

Wheel sensor loose or dirty ring?

Cruise is also linked to the brake switch circuits.

Where would I find the wheel sensor? And would this cause both lights

 

Wheel sensors are inserted into on the hub castings. They are accessed from the non wheel side of the hub. if you trace the electrical wiring from the vehicle body to the hub this will lead you to the sensor. One of these leads is for pad wear warning. The other is the wheel sensor lead.
The interrupter ring (part of the sensing system is part of the driveshaft/hub assemblies and can get clogged with brake dust and general grot.
These devices send a speed signal to the common data network and impact all the systems that you have trouble with.
However why not eliminate the brake switch first.
Do your brake lights work?
Is your car automatic and if so can you get it out of PARK?
If Yes and Yes then this increases the chances that your problem is a speed sensor.

I have an automatic and it comes out of park.

Would the speed sensor be the cause of the BAS/ASR light. Are these seperate issues the BAS and ASR. They always come on at the same time.
