230slk PROBLEMS???
Hi, let's try this again. I'm new to the group and am looking for a good used 230 slk Preferably 1999-2001. I don't seem to be able to find any in the general Philadelphia area worth buying. I know something about engines and drive train but that's it. What should I be looking for in a used SLK? I've read some of the horrifying tales that have been posted but not too many people seem that happy with their cars. Is it the year, model, sophistication or what? Thanks, Johney

RE: 230slk PROBLEMS???
Hi Johney,
Depends what you are looking for!
IMHO V6 much better than Kopmpressor4 from a smoothness and matching to the transmission point of view but performance is about the same and of course gas consumption is slightly worse on the V6.
Ride is quite good for a Sports car but handling and general feel is definitely NOT sports car. Somewhat vague (recirc ball steering box vs rack) and generally imprecise. Quite a bit of noise from rear suspension over dreadful UK roads full of potholes. Basically the SLK is a refined Tourer. Thats what I wanted and I am VERY happy with the car.
Of course the best bit is the variomatic steel fold away roof. The best of both worlds.
Apart from a failed PSE unit (common problem) I have had absolutely NO trouble with my car during its 8 years. Even the battery lasted for 7 years!!.

RE: 230slk PROBLEMS???
I have a 98 that I purchased with 36K on her and in 30K of add miles I've had to put in about a$1,000 all together, however I was able to do somethings myself, which helps. I lovethe car and the 28 mpg isn't bad either. Drive one!
