I have a 1997 sport sl and when I look in the trunk there doesn't seem to be a area where you can insert the wrench to lock and unlock the top.thanks jimbo

to each side of the trunk hinges there should be a cover. after removed you should see red paint where the wrench attaches. the cover latch is just behind the roll bar on each side. easier with roll bar up, but can be done with it down. if you don't have an owners manual, try to find one, it really is the first place to go. the front roof latch requires the hex behind the visor.

Thank you I have the owners manual and I know what to do my question is in my trunk there doesn't seem to be the spot where you insert the wrench. there is no door to lift up or anything I would have to take the pieces out in the trunk to access the red part is. Maybe thy switched out this part from another car but it looks standardthanks jimbo

the access cover should be part of the trunk liner next to the hinge. it's about 1" by 4". if not, then you'll have to remove liner or pull back. don't have to remove liner on drivers side.. the right trunk liner is the easiest to remove and you might be able to just remove a few clips and pull floor mat, then the battery and fender well cover. will help to have proper tool to pull liner clips. too bad the access covers aren't there, makes it so easy. don't make sense they are not there. possible later models didn't have them.

I got mine off ebay. I have used the kit quite a bit and is a good value. it's a five piece set, blue. there is a push in pin lock on the clip. need to pry evenly on both sides of the pin cap. don't pry on clip without removing pin. they are very good clips and are hard to break and replace, just be gentle .

Hey Jimbo - please feel free to give us a call at 888-280-7799 and one of our MB part specialists should be able to help you get sorted with the clips that you're looking for or suggest a working alternative. Hope this helps a bit and best of luck!

I picked up an upholstery removal kit at Harbor Freight for around $9. I was working inside the drivers door but it works on all the clips. I believe they have several versions. Mine is the heavy duty blue plastic, they also had a metal one with possibly an additional tool.
