told a total loss
1997 sl500 roadster after investing thousands and years of rebuilding .told by experts the car doesn't recognize the key.And nothing can be done to solve this problem,no possible way to correct this issue.I can't believe this could happen,no way to fix? Please help .

I find it hard to believe it can't be fixed. Keys are specific to the car. what was done to or replaced on the car??

No work was done or any changes made.Out of the blue after driving from back yard to front yard est.50 feet .It seemed to act like a crank sensor turn over but computer not allowing gas.Told by German experts after diagnosis car no longer recognize's key.The company that made key went out of business .No way to replace it.So many functions based on key makes it impossible to try to replace it.What about people who's keys have been lost or destroyed .Do they expect a total loss?I don't what to do,This was my pride and joy.Heartbreaking,Thank You

I'm confused as to what is not recognized on a key that locks and unlocks, turns in the ignition.? was not aware of anything else. I have a 90 sl, maybe the 97 has features mine doesn't. if you do need a replacement key you should be able to order it from a dealer or a locksmith that specializes in euro cars, may not be cheap. You did change the batteries? check distributor cap and rotor? k40 relay could be a problem. vacuum leak? MAS module has fuel pump relay.
