Sticky shift gate

Oops...I spilt some coffee into my shift gate and now the little moving protector that keeps things from falling into the shift gate hole is sticking. I was able to get as far as removing the flange around the shift gate but no further. Please let me know if any one has any recommendations. The car is an sl320, 1997.
