Purpose of Vacuum element in trunk?

What I believe is called a vacuum element in the trunk of my 75 350 SL is broken. The rod that is connected by a rubber diaphragm came off. Rubber was old. Not sure what purpose it serves. Thanks! Leont

Thanks again, probably why I am having some problems locking and unlocking the trunk.
