Limp Home Mode

Limp Home Mode
I recently experienced a non starting problem with my '91 500SL but after studying the forum's posts, I figured it was a crank position sensor and replaced same. The 500SL started and ran beautifully until I hit the passing gear during a road test. It threw a check engine light then the power was cut in half...enough for me to make it home--barely. While driving it home I kept close watch on the temperature, oil pressure and vacuum pressure....all were normal. Since the '91 has 57,000 original miles I suspect it might be an 02 Sensor. I live on a mountain and the nearest Mercedes independent shop is eight miles and 1500 vertical feet away and if it isn't the O2 sensor, I worry that once I drive it down to the valley, depending on the cost of the problem, I might have to have it towed back to the summit. For that reason I've been trying to find an OM1 scanner that will read the code. Not much luck for the old 9? pin connector in the engine compartment. My question is, I understand that disconnecting the battery will reset the Limp Home Mode, but it will also erase the fault code. I have no problem with paying the local Mercedes shop to read the code, I just don't want to get stuck there. Gentlemen, any advice will be most appreciated.
