Installing a new shift lever on 89 560SL

I bought a replacement shift lever for my 89 560SL from Performance Auto and it comes with zero instructions. It appears to just unscrew by the looks of the new part, but I don't want to break the stock lever that's already on the car. Anybody done this swap before? Advice?
