Head Unit Replacement???

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.

I have recently bought a 1991 500sl. It has the becker head unit with a 10 stack CD player. I am wanting to replace this with a new CD/mp3 head unit such as a JVC one but i have been getting mixed stories about its compatability with the speakers and amp from the factory. One installer looked at my manual for the existing head unit and wasn't 100% sure it would plug'n play. I am wanting to just swap the old head unit with a new JVC one and get rid of the stacker with no extra costs or surprises.
Has anyone done this before successfully? Or does it require a whole new system?

Thanks.

RE: Head Unit Replacement???

There is a good chance that you have a 2 piece radio unit with the 2nd part being in the boot. I think that some of the 500SL's had a Bose amp too??. If you have a fader switch, you can probably connect your speakers to where the 2nd part of the radio has outputs to the amp.

RE: Head Unit Replacement???

Thanks Dondas, I have done some more research and I think the later models had the bose speaker system which complicates things. I have found a company that has done this before and have all the stuff to make it work one way or the other.

Anyone wanting to do this, make sure you go to a company that has done it before and knows exotics such as a 500sl. Apparantly its pretty complicated behind the head unit!!
