A/C filling
 

I just bought a 2000 SL500 and the A/C is not working. Before I take in to have it looked at, can I attempt to top it off myself? The reason I'm asking is because I have a 97 Deville and when the refrigerant is low, the unit shuts off, I get the appropriate message, and it won't take any new freon. I have to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for an hour, start the fill process, then turn it on. It then accepts the freon and I'm good to go.

Can I just attempt a fill on the SL or is there more to it?

Prior to adding refrigerant, many of us would start by diagnosing why the AC didn't come on vs. can you add refrigerant.

Please take a look at the article from the link below. It will explain how to put your climate control unit into diagnostic mode and what the readings mean. No AC could have a half dozen root causes, and these diagnotics will help pinpoint the problem.

I have charged my 500SL with 134
I connected to the low side located about 18" backfrom left headlight.
If you are low on freon low pressure sensor switch is located on the drier, pull connector wires and short them together for a few seconds,
the compressor should kick in right away.
Presure system, check for leaks. :)
