Help , my car is now making a noise in the engine. It sounds to me like valve noise or chain guides. This car has 92k on it. When the car is idling it also seems to have a miss.

 

possibly valve noise. (hydraulic valve elements).

 

Is it a "Tick Tick Tick" kind of sound ?

Or does it sound like someone dragging a chain accross your engine ?


Hydraulic valve may have gotten plugged not allowing a valve to open, therefore causing a "miss". ? ?

With that description and not being able to hear it, that's my first guess ...

 

Have you given it an oil change recently ??

 

It seems to be making a sound like a chain is is the motor and is loose. If the pedal is pressed and the car revs the noise is not there. It is really load at start up. This may be helpful... when I purchased car it was in need of catalytic converters.

 

I have not changed the oil yet, but the oil looked clean .

 

You may have multiple problems.

When you mentioned you had a miss .... is it a slight miss ? or is it like maybe the chain jumped time and the thing is running bad (ie.. backfiring? etc..)

There is a TSB (technical service bullentin) on the Chain Tensioner spill valve.

It states if you have an
"Arrhythmic noise at idle speed at engine coolant temperatures over approx. 40C degrees"
Noise becomes louder as engine warms up, sometimes combines with a squealing noise similar to a V-belt squeal and/or short squealing noise when engine is shut off.

To fix it ... replace the chain tensioner (entire scope and element)

The car doesnt seem to have jumped timming. After going outside to listen to noise again, it sounds more like lifters and the car still runs great . just at low rpm does it seem to have a miss and the lifter noise. I really appreciate your help .

 

What type oil is in it ?

If you've just purchased it and are going to change the oil anyway, I'd do that to get that out of the way. That way you know for sure there's nothing in there that's substandard.

Put some "good" oil in it and make sure to base the viscosity on the temperatures in your area. I use only Mobil 1 Synthetic. But be aware that baby will hold a "****load" and I do mean a "****load" of oil. The oil capacity for the V-12 is around the 12 quart mark, so be prepared to fork over a few bucks. LOL

The same goes with the Tune-up parts for it ... Ie...Distributor Caps and Rotors etc... For example local dealer wanted $135 for the distributor cap EACH - PLUS TAX, and $119 for the rotors EACH - PLUS TAX , there's ~ $550 and you haven't even gotten started with the rest of the complete tune-up.

So you may want to check those components out on yours, because if yours is like mine was, the person before you was probably holding out on doing the tune-up etc.. due the costs invlolved and decided it was cheaper to sell the car. It's worth a look.

Also be EXTREMELY careful with the WIRING HARNESS while under the hood, as the earlier Benz had some real issues with them deteriorating and falling appart (poor quality insulation). So the less you move them around, the less chance of messing them up.
