280 SLC vs other SL class cars
I've found a 1980 280 SLC for sale and am interested but not very educated. I'm curious how the "280" relates to engine size and performance vs the "450" and "560" versions of the car.
In addition, does this model suffer from the timing chain issues that I've seen posted in some discussions?
Assuming good condition body, interior, engine, etc what is the general value of the car? It's up for auction at only about $600 right now, which I'm stunned at. There is no damage/wear reported or visible in the photos...
Any thoughts are appreciated!
Thank you
Damon

There are two significant issues to consider. First, this dual overhead cam six won't keep up with its 8-cylinder brethren. Second, and more important, is that you understand this is a gray-market car that has been modified to meet U.S. emissions requirements. Although this isn't a serious problem, there are some minor issues that you may or may not run into, depending on how well the conversion was done, and yourfuture parts requirements. In general, I'd say if the price is right -- jump on it!</P>

Good to know. Anything specific you could offer by way of guidence to know how well the conversion might have been done? Am hoping to see it/test drive it sunday morning.
And I'm still concerned about the timing chain or belt issue I've heard rumors of. Anyone confirm/deny that?
Thanks!

There is no timing chain issue -- that only pertains to some of the V8s.</P><edited><editID>GermanStar</editID><editDate>37962.6486805556</editDate></edited>
