1993 300SL

I had oil pressure problems for a while now and finally got around to taking off the pan. Once inside I found a razor blade and a few tiny pieces of metal in there. I was wondering if this could be the reason that i would have good pressure sometimes then when i hit the gas i would lose pressure. Is it possible for the blade to block the pump suction and make it lose pressure. Also is there a way to test the pump either by taking it off or while still attached to the car.

the oil pressure is below 3 bar @ 2000rpm?

no, the blade cannot block it because the strainer is rounded shaped.

pump cannot be tested unless there was visual worn-out areas on it... then it needs replacement. it is likely to get broken for it always got ample supply of lubrication.

on old engine, pressure might drop down because of worn out parts such as conrod or main bearing and camshaft bearing. oil pressure might leak slightly from the clearance, but it's fine if it goes to 3 bar sometimes.

RE: 1993 300SL

Thanks for the help sleepwalker. The pressure fluctuated while driving from 3 to red zone so around zero accordiing to the gauge. I changed the sending unit on the pan and the same problem. I assumed the metal i found in there may have blocked some pressure when the gas was hit but I should now look at the bearings. Thanks again for the help, Danny
