the bugs were pretty well worked out by 97. they played around with some funky wiring there for awhile. not a good idea. the 97 sl320 and the 97 & 98 sl500s were as close to perfection as you could get for the 129s. the 96 comes in a close second. not to say they aren't all great cars. some are better than others for problems.

Here's a nice write-up about SL's and particularly 1997
Mercedes SL500 I have a 1996 and like it for all the same reasons. Varible valve timing, 4 valves, 5 speed auto, etc.
