I found a nice inexpensive 450 SL for sale (clean car, no rust or body damage), clean interior, a minor cut in the convertible top (1 1/2 inches long), runs good, but owner told me it over heats sometimes and I have an odd recollection that this car had head problems and I dont want to buy a 1978 with 116,000 miles that needs a new head. This car will only be a fun convertible weekend car and I have good mechanical skills so I can replace the radiator and perform the regular maintenance myself. Just don't want to replacement the head at this point.

Needs new tires, tune up, oil change, windshield washer pump, etc (maybe put $2000 into car and have seats re-done)

He is asking $5500 or best offer, I think I can buy it for $4500 He also has the hard top in storage.

What are your thoughts on this car and any knowledge of head problems that would lead to over heating on this year and model.
