wind shield wiper on a S500 1994

wind shield wiper on a S500 1994
Aloha everybody!!
I was cleaning my car the other day and noticed that on the drivers side wiper has what looks like a cylinder/piston type of wiper arm, then I noticed that the length of the wiper seemed to be a little bit to long, I was wondering if what I think might be correct here, that the wiper pulls its self in and out when in motion? if so how can I get this working once again?
