Resetting Codes?

I'm a new MB owner. I had my first oil change at a non MB dealership, subsequently my codes were not reset. Is this something that has to be done olny by the MB dealer?

RE: Resetting Codes?

Hi,
Welcome.
FSS = Service Interval Counter can be reset by the customer or independent garage if required. Read the handbook to determine the procedure required. Basically press the "C" button on the dash for so many seconds etc. Differs model to model.
This procedure records that the counter has been reset by a non MB dealer.

Diagnostic codes are a totally different thing.
These require an OBDII scan tool in order to read and cancel them / the CEL Check Engine Light.

All modern vehicles have to be OBDII compliant which means that it is no longer necessary to go to the MB dealer to have engine/trans codes read.
Other electrical systems are another matter!

Hope this helps.
Stuart.

RE: Resetting Codes?

You can do it yourself, the directions are in the owners manual. I hope you did not go the Jiffylube route, use genuine MB "fleece filters" and Mobil 1synthetic. Or find an inipendent who will do it, my dealer is pretty competive on oil changes, since they dont need the highly trained technician.

RE: Resetting Codes?

There is no record of who resets the FSS, if it is reset by mistake the dealer can correct it with the shop diagnostic software.
Get in the car, close the door, electronc key to position 2, call up the trip and main odometer, scroll up or down with the steering wheel arrowbuttons, untill FSS appears, push the R button for two seconds, it will ask again if you want to "reset service interval", push button again and hold until signal sounds, a message will appear confirming "service interval reset".

You learn something every day.
I had been advised by my "friendly" MB dealer that reset from SDS STAR left a different history record to Cancel from the C button which can be done by anyone.
But of course they have a vested interest.
Stuart.

RE: Resetting Codes?

They pulled that crap on me once when I only wanted an oil change, telling me that if it is reset they can not tell if all "the services" had been performed. last time I was in for Ooil change they called and asked if I want it reset, of course! Workshop resource page.
