Is replacing the Heater Control easy for DIY?

Hi,

As my blower has stopped working, I am going to replace the control display (which looks ok??) to see if this will rectify the problem.

Can anyone tell me if this is straightforward or not or should it be done by a Technician?

Thanks, Mark.

Dont start replacing things MarK
There are a few things to check, the "blower" is controlled by the HVAC control. It is one of the more solid items in the chain. The blower is controlled by the blower regulator that sits on the blower housing, be aware it is in the ground leg of the blower power (I dont know why), the regulator fails, there is also a issue where the bearings on the motor corrode. I would take off the cover and see if it spins freely, the next step would be to ground the negative side, if it takes off it is probably the regulator, after that it is trial and error

Peter -

Thank you very much for the reply. I have just had a diagnostic completed and it stated that the Control is faulty. The Technician said although it may not be accurate, he was 99% sure that it would be the Control but added he could check it out when they get another S Class in from a friend and try it out from his.

Do you think this sounds about right or have they missed the tricks you have kindly mentioned and should look at these first?
He did look at the blower and all mechanical and electrcis look good.

Thanks, Mark.

I would assume if he is a reliable tech you could take his word. I think those attatchments show you how run a trouble check.

Thanks for that Peter,

Unfortunately, the links don't seem to cover my model which is WDB220 - 1999 430L.

I will try something I picked up on there but think I will source the Control and let the Technician fit it unless this is straightforward. Do you think I could just drop the Control down form the console and simply replace it?

I dont know about the 220 style, the 1999 S in the states was a 140 body and had two styles, pre 95 and post, and the diagnostics shown under "new style" by Continental imports apply. I assume it is an early Europe introduction, the 220 was not imported untill 2000.

Peter - Thanks for your all your help. Thr pressing of the 'Rest' button does actually work on my model which is in accordance with the links you supplied me with...

Unless anyone else can advise me how to replace the Control then I will book it in to be done by the Techs.

Cheers, Mark.
