Default passenger side rear view mirror

Long time lurker, first time poster. Need help.

The rear view mirror on my 1996 S320 is loose after I hit a road side trash can. Electronic control is working, but mirror flops slightly downward. Any help will be most appreciated.

I should add, the mirror housing part is find only the mirror insert itself is loose. I hope this is fixable. Thanks again.

doyou mean the mirror glass? the glass is replaceable and are very expensive, then there is the painted part which is called the cover, which is also replaceable, but other than that youll need to get the whole assembly. can you get a pic of it on here?

Thanks for your reply. Both mirror and cover are intact and in good shape, except the mirror is hanging loose from the cover. Is there a clip I can secure it back to the cover?

There are two springy clips that holds the mirror in place, then there is also a retaining piece of metal (looks like a long thin pice of metal wire), which holds it firmly in place.

I have never replaced the mirror units myself, but have had a garage change both sides now (wire insulation came off in the end), and they gave me the old bits of mirror glass, so can see what the back looks like.

If the clip is missing, get a new bit of glass. Its the only cheap bit! I think you have to take the outside plastic cover off to fix the mirror glass on.....

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. Both clips and the metal wire are in place.

This really help a lot - give me enough incentive to work on it. You are great!
