Looking to buy a 2000 s430 or s500
 

I am looking at a 2000 s430 and also a 500 with high mileage, approx. in the high 90's. Its alL I can afford right now, but I am inquiring because I want to know if they are known to have problems. I know it is the first year of this generation and obviously they are way passed the warranty stage, but will they last for some good time? Basically is it even worth it to buy. THank you to anyone who can help. Chris

I just bought a used 2000 S430 and love it. You definately need to tke your time shopping. I was looking for either a 500 or 430 since the only real difference is 30+ horsepower. Seems that many of these cars tend to be mistreated by people who can afford the car, but could care less about how they treat it. When the warranty expires, they rarely spend the extra coin to keep things in good working order and when something goes bad, they simply trade it in for a new one. Like you, I cant afford a brand new 80-90K car, but I will spend 20-30K on a well kept model. Be sure to get the VIN on any one you're looking at and ask the MB dealer to see if its been serviced regularly and if an major repairs were made, or repeated. The big issue I've read about on this particular year is the airmatic suspension. Its hit or miss, but its obviously an issue you need to look out for. Fixing it can cost $1k plus. Just remember..it's a Benz, and like any expensive car (new or used) fixing it will always cost 3X more than the average car. Long story short...find one that has been well maintained and don't be afraid to spend the coin to keep it in good running order. Don't wait for things to break and you'll definately see 200K like I have on the other ones I've owned. Good luck.
