This is probably a question for all forums but I have a rumble in my 96 S320.

At around 80-100kmh there is a low pitch high frequency rumble. As I accelerate to about 120k it dissapates and returns on deceleration. It remains with power off or on at those speeds and is more prominant when coasting at speed down hill.

I have balance the tyres to eliminate that problem and am thinking it may be a shaft out of balance perhaps. Not quite sure.

I have had the car 3 days so am still in talks with the seller but as I am in Hong Kong it becomes an issue of buyer beware.

It's hard to pinpoint but you can feel it through the seat and when I place my hands on the centre consul I can also feel the vibes. Somewhere from down below but I can't say if it is forward or rearward.

 

Check the insulating pad in the driveshaft tunnel, they sometimes come down and ride on the front flex disc on the drive shaft. It will feel like a wheel or drivetrain vibration.

 

could be alot of things wheel bearing comes to mind first but would have to run it on a lift and listen with a stethoscope

 

That is a possibility. It is Chinese New Year here so no hope of getting anything done until after Tues. The dealer seems to be helpful so hopefully will get to the bottom of it.

Rumble yet to be investigated but I am pleased to report that after reading the advice on some threads I have been able to get all my door vacuum pumps opertating. Most impressed and thank you to who suggested resetting the ciruit breakers.

 

Had the mechanic take it for a ride and he thinks it might be the drive shaft coupling. Says he can replace it for about $300US. Any thoughts? Is it likely that the coupling might cause a vibration such as this only at a certain rpm?

 

Just to conclude the rumble...it has now gone.

Mechanic replaced the propshaft bearing and mounting as well as 2 flexi couplings. Price as quoted.
