Default Fuel Indicator (Malfunction)

[:-]I have a 1996 S420 59K miles in immaculate condition and well maintained. Fuel indicator will go down to empty while driving when tank is full. Few seconds later, it will general go back to proper fuel setting. After several malfunctions, when it malfunction once again, the check engine light came on and is now still on. However, as usual the fuel indicated went back to normal. I need help?

Thanks in Advance

your fuel sending unit is bad, i am not sure how to change it on your car.
on my 00 s500, it was located behind the carpet trim in the trunk.
very easy to replace if you can locate it.
