I have a 1997 S420 and the engine SOMETIMES won't crank at all. Theinstrument cluster lights come on and the car is in Park and my foot is off the brake.. but sometimes the starterwon't crank. Is this a problem with me or the igition switch or something else? After I turn the ignition switch a few more times or fiddle with the gear lever, the engine starts as if there was never any problem at all... But I don't know what is happening and Ifear I amy get stranded some day..

you may have a few things that would cause this 1 a bad ignition switch second a bad reed contact in you valve body. if you replace your ignition switch and it still does it them replaced you valve body electrical contact plate

 

My technician says that there may be an electronic problem too..
