Default advice on longevity of a new S or SL

I am in the market for a new or one to two year old car. Considering either a S550 cabriolet or SL. But I drive about 18,000 miles a year, mostly highway, and want advice as to those of your with mercedes experience believe either of these cars would be reliable for 120,000 to 150,000 miles. The only mercedes I have had was a CLK320 several years ago and I was not too impressed with it and traded in for a lexus 430 which has been an excellent car over the past 10 years I have had it. I tend to keep my cars for several years. thanks in advance for an honest opinion.

Mercedes from the late 90's to mid 00's had more quality issues than most other premium makes. The later models are much better. The basic engine and transmissions should hold up fine, it's everything else that can go bad. Suspension, electronics, accessories etc.

Well we have seen a few of those come into the dealership with mostly small electrical issues. The drivetrain will probably last many miles. But if going by similar designs as far as engine, sometimes the seals in the oil cooler go and cause oil and coolant mixing. If not caught early, it can cause a dead engine well before the 150, 000 mark. The key is to not ignore little warning signs and keep up with maintenance.

These cars are made to be driven. As with any mercedes, keep it up and it will last. But repairs for not doing so may be pricey.

And expect suspension work to be done within that time. And a few sensors here and there. And a few things to go out with the convertible top sensors and such.

You will be fine. They seem bit less problematic than early w220s.

The SL and the S class is a totally different animal than the clk320 which can be a problematic pita at times. Especially convertible form.
