97' S500 Won't Start
Hey Guys,
So today I went out to start my car and right away I heard a clicking sound when turning the ignition. I waited about 5 minutes and tried again and the engine started to turn over for about 3 seconds then went back to the clicking sound. Would this be the battery? Fuel pump? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Alex

I gave the car a jump and finally got it going. It turns out that the radio would automatically turn on even when the car was turned off.. draining the battery. Still working on a fix for that. I think it may be due to the fact that the antenna won't go down anymore.
Hey guys, so after turning it off overnight I have the same problem. The radio was not on. When I tried to start it nothing happened then after a few tries I got the clicking again... I've had the same battery since 1997. I'm guessing and praying it's just the battery?
13 years out of a battery? WOW! I'd start there. One of the only things I'll buy from a stealer is a battery. If you call roadside assistance, they'll come out and replace it for you too, and reset all your computers, windows, etc. All for the cost of the battery.
If you don't have any problem with the battery holding a charge, it probably isn't the battery. Try putting the headlights on and see if they are at full brightness or a dull yellow glow. That's a pretty informal test, repairers can easily test a battery properly, so I'd recommend that before you lash out for a new one. If the battery is fine, you may have a problem I had which is a bald spot on the starter motor, that is the motor can come to rest at any position on a 360 degree rotation. At some positions, the brushes contact the rotor correctly, at others, there is a contact breakdown (wear, contaminants) and switching on the starter does not cause the starter motor to rotate. So you may need a new starter motor. Not that big a deal.
