96 S500 Sedan Throttle Actuator

Has anyone has any problems with their S500 simply dying at stops? Mercedes was under the hood all weekend, no codes appeared. However when i came to pick it up on Monday, it died again about 5 miles from the dealership. The lead mechanic took a look a said the throttle actuator was faulty to include replacing the gasket, hose and engine air filters to a tune of $2207. Took it to another mechanic and he suggested it was Electronic Control Module $2600 part. Any suggestions...HELP

vpmonroe, I replied to your email and will reply here also. I had a local shop that was recomended to me work on it. They fixed my windows not rolling down, replaced my front struts and fixed the stalling problem for $2400. I just went out to the car to get the repair ticket and my wife has put it somewhere and she is asleep. When I get the repair ticket from her I will post what all they did. It runs better than ever right now.

RE: 96 S500 Sedan Throttle Actuator

I would checkout the Crankshaft Postion Sensor (CPS)

Can cause the car to die and a diagnostic code is usually not recorded.

Check the wiring first, if all is ok, then continue to the next step.

There is a known issue with insufficient clearance between CPS and the flywheel segments.

To correct it, you can remove the CPS, and insert a .5mm thick shim under it, between the CPS and the contacting surface (the engine block).

You can make the shim out of gasket paper or something similar.

I would do this before you continue as it does cost anything but time (and the .5mm shim if you can't make one) and it's a known issue.

Hope this helps.
